The History Of The Modern Day Diamond

Diamonds are believed to have first been discovered in India over 2,000 years ago. The exact date and location of the discovery are unknown, but historical records indicate that diamonds were traded along ancient trade routes throughout India and the Middle East.

Diamonds were highly prized for their rarity, beauty, and hardness. They were initially used as talismans and for decorative purposes by the wealthy and powerful, such as rulers and royalty.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, diamond deposits were discovered in Brazil and South Africa, which led to an increase in the availability and affordability of diamonds. However, it wasn't until the late 1800s that diamonds became widely used in jewelry, thanks in part to a successful marketing campaign by the De Beers diamond company.

The De Beers company was founded in 1888 by Cecil Rhodes and became the world's largest diamond producer. In the early 1900s, the company launched a successful advertising campaign promoting diamonds as a symbol of love and commitment, which led to an increase in demand for diamond engagement rings and other diamond jewelry.

Today, diamonds are one of the most popular gemstones used in jewelry, prized for their beauty, durability, and symbolism. They are often used in engagement rings, wedding bands, and other pieces of fine jewelry, and are associated with luxury, elegance, and timeless beauty.
