Our Selection of Rings:
Buying diamond jewelry or upgrading your current diamond jewelry is more complicated than many shoppers realize. Diamonds are evaluated by what’s referred to in the industry as the 4 C’s:
Cut: Often mistaken for shape, the cut of a diamond actually refers to the reflective qualities of a diamond. The cut of a diamond determines how the light hits the stone and is directed back out to the observer creating its brilliance. There are several different types and qualities of cuts, and we can talk you through choosing what’s best for your needs and your budget.
Clarity: Measured under 10X magnification, the clarity of a diamond is graded on a fairly wide scale ranging from “F” for flawless to “I” for included. At Scanlon Jewelers, we are familiar with every type of imperfection a stone can have, and we can help you choose your stone based on the fact that clarity can sometimes affect value but not appearance.
Color: Not to be confused with colored diamonds, this characteristic refers to the tint, or lack thereof, in white diamonds. It is graded on letter scale starting at “D,” which would refer to a perfectly colorless diamond that allows the most light to travel through; it is the rarest and most valuable. We can take you through the different grades and help you choose based on how “cool” or “warm” you’d like your stone to be.
Carat Weight: Not to be confused with karat which measures the purity of gold, one carat is 200 milligrams. The carat weight of your diamond is mostly determined by your budget and at Scanlon, we can help find whatever size fits your finances.
Colored diamonds, often called “fancy diamonds,” have been growing in popularity in recent years. Naturally occurring colored stones are more rare than white diamonds making them highly sought after and of course, pricier. Today white diamonds can be manipulated to create synthetic colored diamonds. Usually gemologists will use lower quality white diamonds and give them a “face lift.” Some of the trendiest colored diamonds out there today include:
